Non-Georgetown Summer School Policies
During your School of Foreign Service (SFS) undergraduate degree program, you may transfer a maximum of 12 credits from summer and winter break courses throughout your undergraduate career to your Georgetown transcript.
Explore the requirements and application process for taking non-Georgetown summer courses. While similar conditions apply to winter break courses, please consult with your dean for additional factors that affect the transferability of winter courses.
Application process
- Submit the non-Georgetown summer school application before enrolling in summer courses at another college or university.
- Do not pay for summer courses until you receive approval from our office.
Please note, the total credits you transfer to your Georgetown degree cannot exceed 60, including AP/IB credits and study abroad credits (aside from Georgetown campuses abroad).
Course approval requirements
Non-Georgetown summer courses must be approved by the School of Foreign Service’s Dean’s Office for credit transfer.
Major and core courses
- Major courses require approval from your dean.
- Core courses are governed by the respective curriculum committees. Approvals are obtained via your dean.
Minor and certificate courses
- Minor courses need additional approval from the relevant department.
- Certificate courses must be additionally approved by the corresponding certificate program.
- Minors and certificate programs have faculty or staff in charge of approving study abroad courses. Request this approval via email, which should be saved as a PDF and uploaded with your application.
Course eligibility criteria
To be eligible for transfer, courses must be taken at an accredited college or university, accepted toward an undergraduate degree and reflected on that institution’s transcript.
All courses must be taken for a grade, and you need to earn a grade of at least C or higher from the host institution for the course to transfer to your Georgetown degree.
Note that grades from non-Georgetown summer courses will not appear on your Georgetown transcript nor be calculated in your Georgetown GPA.
Application deadline
Keep in mind that no application may be submitted later than July 15.
Ensure that your application is submitted at least two weeks before the course start date. This allows your dean adequate time to review your application, ask for additional information or discuss how the course fits into your academic program.
Applications submitted less than two weeks before the course begins may be denied.
