Graduate Certificate in Global Human Development
The Graduate Certificate in Global Human Development provides training in the field to complement your primary regional or functional degree.
There is a demand for professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the landscape of international development across various disciplines, including international law, business, foreign service, security and regional studies. In our increasingly interconnected world, addressing the concerns of the world’s most vulnerable is of paramount importance for successful outcomes in national and global economic stability and growth, diplomacy and security. Through interdisciplinary coursework and co-curricular offerings, this certificate will prepare you to be part of the solution.
Eligibility
The certificate is open to all Georgetown graduate students except those in the Master of Global Human Development and the International Development concentration for the M.S. in Foreign Service. You must be enrolled in a Georgetown graduate program to qualify for the certificate, as it is not offered on a standalone basis.
Requirements
You must complete five approved, three-credit courses for 15 total credits. Required courses include:
- One gateway or foundation course (3 credits)
- International Development Gateway course (GHDP-602: Introduction to Development Practice, 3 credits)

- Both courses are offered in the spring. If these courses are not currently offered, an equivalent course may be taken, subject to the approval of the GHD administration.
- 12 credits of elective courses from an approved list or by petition (1.5 or 3 credits)
- A maximum of six of the total 15 certificate credits may be ‘double-counted’ courses that you take to satisfy your home program degree requirements.
In addition, you must achieve:
- A minimum grade of B+ in the gateway course
- An overall GPA of 3.0 and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 for certificate courses
The certificate does not require an internship or proficiency in a foreign language. However, if you wish to pursue one or both, we encourage you to do so.
