Financial Aid, Scholarships and Stipends
Pursuing a Master of Global Human Development degree is an important investment in your future. Here are some options for funding your education.
Merit scholarships
We offer a number of merit-based scholarships each year to new and returning students of all nationalities. Scholarships are in the form of full or partial tuition remission. Scholarships awarded in the first year are renewable at the same amount for the second year, contingent on the recipient meeting certain academic standards.
Since merit-based scholarships are not guaranteed and funding amounts may vary, it is incumbent on applicants to be proactive in seeking out external funding sources to cover the difference between the cost of attendance and any scholarship funding that the program provides. Many scholarships and fellowships have deadlines prior to or during the GHD admissions cycle, so you should apply for external funding simultaneously with your GHD application.
To apply for merit aid, please check the applicable box on your application form. Submitting your application by our priority deadline of January 15 will maximize your chances of receiving merit aid.
Coverdell Fellowship
Returned Peace Corps volunteers admitted to the Global Human Development program with a minimum of a 33% tuition scholarship funding per year will qualify as Coverdell Fellows. As a Coverdell Fellow, you are eligible for additional merit-based scholarships based on the competitiveness of your application, which may cover partial tuition. Once enrolled, you will complete internships in underserved American communities, allowing you to bring home and expand upon the skills you learned as a volunteer.
Additionally, the Global Human Development program will waive the application fee for all returned Peace Corps volunteers who apply to the program—email ghdinfo@georgetown.edu to request a waiver.
Fellowship consideration
To be considered for the fellowship, you must submit:
- All required application materials
- GREs are recommended but not required for consideration for the fellowship
- Peace Corps description of service (DOS): you can upload this file as a PDF after you submit your application. Once you submit, you will have access to an application status portal to upload additional materials, including the DOS. If you have any trouble, email your DOS to ghdinfo@georgetown.edu and we can add it to your application record.
Assistance for international students
International students are eligible for graduate student awards and scholarships. You can also use loans and funding sources from your home country.
International student scholarships
We offer merit-based scholarships to international students from these regions:
- Sub-Saharan Africa: At least one full-tuition scholarship and several partial scholarships for these students. These were made possible through the generous support of the Amre and Caroline Heinz-Youness Family and the William and Catherine McGurn Family.
- The Philippines: The Father Bienvenido Nebres, S.J. Scholarship covers full tuition for a student from the Philippines.
- Asia: A student from Asia may receive a partial tuition scholarship.
- Latin America: The Beeck Latin America Endowed Scholarship covers 50% of tuition for a student from Latin America.
- The Middle East: A student from this region will receive a partial tuition scholarship.
Scholarship consideration
To be considered for the scholarships, you must submit all required application materials. The scholarships will be awarded based on the overall strength of applications. The deadline for scholarship consideration is January 15. You can still apply to the Master of Global Human Development program by April 1 but you will not be considered for scholarships.
External scholarships
You may also find funding from a variety of external sources. These may include federal aid, public service loan forgiveness, fellowships, part-time employment or scholarships for language study.
