On March 5, 2021, SFS hosted alumni leaders in civil and human rights to share insights from their work fighting for social justice in the United States. The panel featured President and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center Margaret Huang (SFS’91), LGBTQ+ rights advocate, former President of Human Rights Campaign and SFS Centennial Honors recipient Chad Griffin (SFS’97) and Senior Legal Advisor and Deputy Chief of Party at the American Bar Association Haben Fecadu (SFS’08). The discussion was moderated by Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Scott Taylor. All three panelists emphasized the importance of building coalitions across social justice and human rights movements.
“When we all can come together from across social justice movements and fight for one another, and with one another, that brings strength to everyone,” Griffin said. Each of the alumni shared their own successes and challenges on the front lines of social justice causes and laid out a vision for the way ahead. Huang added, “Even a victory of some kind doesn’t mean that all the hard work has been done.”
