The National Resource Center on the Middle East and North Africa (NRC-MENA) is pleased to offer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for language and area studies in the 2021-2022 academic year. These fellowships are funded by a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
FLAS awards may be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students for the study of Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish. Beginners in any of these languages may apply for a FLAS Fellowship, but must place into an intermediate-level course at the beginning of the fellowship period. FLAS Fellows are required to take an area studies and a language course each semester of the fellowship.
For graduate students, each fellowship provides $18,000 for tuition/fees and a $15,000 stipend. For undergraduate students, the fellowship provides $10,000 for tuition/fees and a $5,000 stipend.
Eligibility
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be enrolled full-time.
- Must have minimum of intermediate-level proficiency in FLAS language.
- Must be a continuing Georgetown student.
