Richard Butrick (SFS‘21) serves as Director General of the Foreign Service from 1959-1952, critical early years of the Cold War.
Immediately following Butrick’s graduation in 1921, he had been posted to the U.S. Consulate General in Hankou, China. After Hankou, Butrick took up positions in Beijing and Shanghai. Following the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Butrick was interned by Japanese forces occupying China for six months.
