Title: SFS Dean Joel Hellman Issues Statement in Support of Iran Protesters

Georgetown campus front gates

The brutal attack on students protesting at Tehran’s Sharif University is the latest affront to the brave forces in Iran fighting for freedom and for recognition of the fundamental rights of women. That the Government’s campaign of brute force and intimidation has now reached the campus of one of Iran’s most storied universities represents yet another contemptible milestone for Iran’s repressive regime and must be a concern for universities everywhere. As our own campus just recently celebrated the legacy of Madeleine Albright, who urged us to always “stand on the side of freedom” and dedicated her life to inspiring women with the “courage to interrupt,” we join other universities around the world in standing with the students, faculty, and staff of Sharif University in support of their struggle and call for all students currently detained or missing to be released safely. And we add our voice to the many in Iran courageously fighting for equity, justice, and an end to intolerance.
