Margaux Ochoa
2021 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar
My name is Margaux Ochoa, and I am a junior in the SFS studying International Politics with a concentration in International law, Institutions and Ethics with a minor in Government. I am from and live in McAllen Texas, a city located on the Texas-Mexico border in South Texas. I am passionate about community social entrepreneurship, and service. With this in mind and at heart, I recently founded a nonprofit organization called On the Border, which I hope will become weaved into the fabric of my community over the next decade, and beyond. On the Border is a legally incorporated nonprofit in the State of Texas dedicated to humanitarian response and community development in the South Texas border region. I also work as a Spanish translator and legal assistant for immigrant families who were separated by the President Trump administration at my sector of the border. With this same legal team, I created, organized and led “know your rights” in McAllen, Texas at the Catholic Charities Humanitarian Respite Center. In any capacity, I hope to be of service to the community I love, that made me, and that gave me everything—the Rio Grande Valley. As I continue learning and growing, I hope to explore non-governmental ways of advancing the interests of historically underserved communities, like my own.
