Senator Armando Ríos Piter spoke on Mexico’s political future at an event hosted by the Center for Latin American Studies. Ríos Piter, an independent representing the Mexican state of Guerrero, stressed the importance of a new political formula to solve critical issues in Mexico, including inequality, insecurity and corruption, as the 2018 presidential elections approach. The Senator called on citizens to challenge traditional power structures and generate a shift away from these systemic issues, promoting the idea of an independent political movement–one that he may lead as a potential presidential candidate.
The way I look at it is that we have a two-way road ahead. We can choose to either replicate formulas of the past or we can create new options … In Mexico, right now, everyone is thinking about the 2018 elections, but only a few people are thinking of new ways to do politics.
Ríos Piter also commented on relations with the United States, considering that and other challenges in the light of Mexican history and society. The event was moderated by Professor John Tutino.
