Title: SFS Cheers on Hoyas for SFS100 Day at Capital One Arena

On Saturday, February 8, the SFS turned out to cheer on the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team in their 76-72 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons. The SFS-sponsored game at Capital One Arena provided a special opportunity for the SFS community to celebrate its 100 years of global service while supporting student athletes on campus.

The day began with a reception for SFS students, alumni, faculty, staff, and their families at the Etihad Lounge, with the university mascot, Jack the Bulldog, showing up to get everyone excited for the big game.

SFS fans enjoyed a fast-paced, nail-biting game and cheered on the team in SFS and Georgetown Hoyas t-shirts that were given out at the reception and caught by lucky members of the crowd.

Dean Joel Hellman also got to show off his Georgetown sports knowledge, giving a court-side radio interview to Rich Chvotkin, the voice of Georgetown basketball. They discussed the SFS, its centennial year, and student athletics.

The SFS community was celebrated both on court and on the big screen. Georgetown Alumni President Richard Hluchan (SFS’71, P’08, P’09) and class leader Deborah Hluchan (SFS’71, P’08, P’09) presented the game ball. Michael Williams (SFS’98, L’01, P’22) and Julin Williams (P’22) received the Walsh School of Foreign Service Recognition Award on center court in appreciation for their longstanding and vital support of Georgetown and its Georgetown Scholars Program

SFS student athlete and alumni stories played on the big screen during timeouts. Ciara Weets (SFS’22), Science, Technology, and International Affairs major and field hockey athlete; Jenna Menta (SFS’21), International Politics major and soccer athlete; and Josiah Laney (SFS’21), International Politics major and track and field athlete, all shared their experiences of being a student athlete. SFS. Ret. Gen. James L. Jones, Jr., (SFS’66, H’06) also reminisced about his time as a Georgetown basketball player, recalling the 1963 game when they defeated the defending national champions.

As the game came to its exciting finish, generations of SFS students and staff cheered on their team and celebrated the SFS Centennial with some impressive school spirit!
