Denny Newhouse is a graduate student in the Global Human Development program. This summer, Denny worked with the American Red Cross and Myanmar Red Cross Society on disaster risk reduction programs in Yangon, Myanmar and with CARE Bangladesh on emergency response programs in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Originally from Los Angeles, Denny graduated from Harvard University in 2011 with a BA in Government. She was awarded a post-graduate year-long traveling fellowship that enabled her to live and work in various countries in Africa. Her first position was with a water sanitation and hygiene-focused NGO in rural Mozambique. Next, she moved to South Africa to teach in a low-income township. She ended her fellowship interning for CARE Ethiopia’s Emergency Unit during the drought crisis. The following year she returned to Mozambique as a Project Manager for an educational NGO that ran a small project (“Projecto Oceano”) on an island in the north. Additionally, she has worked in India; first working with street children in Bombay and afterwards on a clinical trial in a tuberculosis hospital in rural Andhra Pradesh.
