Dual and Joint Degrees

You can combine your Master of Science in Foreign Service degree with another degree at Georgetown University. This includes programs in the Joint Office of Graduate Studies, the Georgetown University Law Center, the McCourt School of Public Policy and the McDonough School of Business.

You must complete individual applications for each, pay separate application fees and be admitted into each program independently. In addition to completing graduation requirements for both degrees, all candidates for joint and dual programs must:

  • Pass the M.S. in Foreign Service language proficiency examination
  • Pass the M.S. in Foreign Service one-hour oral examination
  • Complete the M.S. in Foreign Service leadership requirement, including an internship or professional experience

J.D./MSFS

The Juris Doctor/M.S. in Foreign Service dual degree is a four-year, full-time, 115-credit program that includes courses from the required M.S. in Foreign Service curriculum and international law. A typical schedule includes 24 MSFS credits in the first year, 31 J.D. credits in the second year, and a combination of credits from both during the third and fourth years.

Although it is preferable that you apply to both programs simultaneously, you can apply for the dual degree program during your first year of either program. You should indicate your intentions for a dual degree on all admissions materials. The M.S. in Foreign Service accepts the LSAT instead of the GRE or GMAT for dual degree applicants. However, standardized tests are optional for our program. J.D. program information and application materials are available from the Georgetown University Law Center.
