Co-Curricular Opportunities
The Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) provides co-curricular activities to complement and enhance the knowledge you gain in the classroom.
We believe in enriching academic pursuits through diverse experiences during which you can explore your interests. Whether through skill-building workshops, thought-provoking lectures or hands-on clinics, the MSFS program encourages you to engage in these offerings to add to your experience.
Internships
During the MSFS program, you will complete an internship at an internationally-focused organization. Through this hands-on experience, you will prepare for a career in international affairs by exploring professional sectors while making lasting professional connections.
Clinics
Clinics focus on a single skill or topic that is vital to international relations practitioners. Some are concentration-specific, while others explore subjects that are relevant to all students. Clinics are taught by subject-matter experts who guide you through hands-on training sessions incorporating current and relevant material.
Previous clinics include:
- A Chevron communications clinic where students learned to hone essential communication skills for leadership in international affairs.
- A Civil Rights Movement clinic designed for students interested in ethical leadership, human rights, democratic reform, nonviolent resistance, social movements and conflict resolution.
Practitioners in Residence
The Practitioners in Residence initiative promotes interactions between your MSFS cohort and leading practitioners in international affairs to advance your professional development. Every year, leading global affairs professionals are selected to mentor you and offer career guidance through skills clinics, seminars and career sessions.
Lectures and other events
You have the opportunity to attend regularly held events on campus in which prominent practitioners and academic experts speak on topics of regional and global importance. Lectures also include informal conversations during which you have the ability to talk with leading practitioners about their work.
Join a student organization
You can also join student organizations to connect with your peers over shared interests. From the Africa Forum, which spreads awareness and promotes dialogue about the 54 African nations, to Georgetown Women in International Affairs, which is dedicated to increasing the visibility of women in international affairs and developing quality leadership, you can find an opportunity to grow your passions.
