Dual and Joint Degrees 

You may combine your Master of Arts in European Studies (MAES) with other graduate degrees from Georgetown University programs. 

MAES/Ph.D. in German

The coursework requires 66 credits (over three years) in the M.A. in European Studies program and the Department of German. This program complements doctoral studies in German with a broader understanding of contemporary Germany and Europe’s economies, cultures, history, politics and international relations. At the Ph.D. level, you’ll direct your studies in one of two field concentrations: literary and cultural studies or linguistic and cultural studies.

You must complete all degree requirements for both the Ph.D. in German and the M.A. in European Studies with these variations:

  • M.A. in European Studies free electives must comprise required courses from the Department of German.
  • You must pass the M.A. in European Studies second foreign language examination before taking departmental comprehensive examinations.

MAES/Ph.D. in Government

The coursework requires 63 credits (over three years) in the M.A. in European Studies program and the Department of Government. This program complements disciplinary studies in Government with the interdisciplinary regional focus of the M.A. in European Studies.

You must complete all degree requirements for both the Ph.D. in Government and the M.A. in European Studies with these variations:

  • M.A. in European Studies free elective course work must comprise required courses from the Department of Government.
  • You must pass the M.A. in European Studies second foreign language examination before taking departmental comprehensive examinations.

MAES/Ph.D. in History

The coursework requires 60 credits (over three years) in the M.A. in European Studies program and the Department of History. This program provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation for more advanced, specialized work in European history.

You must complete all requirements for both the Ph.D. in History and the M.A. in European Studies with these variations:

  • M.A. in European Studies free elective coursework must comprise required courses from the Department of History.
  • You must pass your foreign language examination before taking departmental comprehensive examinations.

MAES/J.D.

This four-year course of study comprises a minimum of 110 credit hours: 74 hours of Law Center courses and 36 hours of M.A. in European Studies work. You typically begin the dual degree program at the Law School, spend your second year in the M.A. in European Studies program and take coursework in both programs during your third and fourth years.

MAES/MPP

This dual degree requires three years of full-time study with 69 credits, comprised of 36 Master of Public Policy credit hours and 33 M.A. in European Studies credit hours. The dual degree combines requirements from both programs and to earn it you must:

  • Achieve a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Write a thesis in the Master of Public Policy thesis workshop, subject to additional conditions
  • Pass the M.A. in European Studies oral exam in the fall of your third-year
  • Satisfy the M.A. in European Studies language requirements
  • Achieve oral proficiency in a European language other than English
  • Achieve reading proficiency in a second European language other than English
