Graduate Certificate of Arab Studies 

The Certificate of Arab Studies provides a regional focus through the study of the language, history and institutions of the Arab world within the framework of your discipline.

Eligibility

To enroll in this certificate program, you must be either a current master’s or Ph.D. student at Georgetown University.

Certificate requirements

Current master’s candidates must take 15 credits to earn this certificate including: 

  • Either ARST 5500: Constructing the Modern MENA OR ARST 5501: Introduction to the Study of the Arab World
  • Two Arab Studies electives (any course with an ARST prefix)
  • Two free electives focused on the Arab world

Current Ph.D. candidates must take 21 credits to earn this certificate including:

  • Either ARST 5500: Constructing the Modern MENA or ARST 5501: Introduction to the Study of the Arab World
  • Three Arab Studies electives (courses with an ARST prefix)
  • Three free electives focused on the Arab World

Arabic proficiency 

You must also demonstrate Arabic proficiency by:

  • Completing four semesters of Arabic language study (or show evidence of being a native speaker/reader/writer)
  • Taking an Arabic Placement Exam and testing into Advanced Arabic (ARAB 2216 or higher)
  • Completing an oral proficiency interview with a minimum rating of advanced-mid

Please note that Arabic language courses and testing are administered by Georgetown’s Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, not the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. You are responsible for making your own arrangements to register for Arabic classes or take a proficiency exam
