SFS welcomes General Timothy Haugh to Security Studies Program

Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service welcomes retired Air Force General Timothy D. Haugh to the school as a Distinguished Fellow in Residence within the Security Studies Program (SSP). Gen. Haugh served for more than 30 years in the U.S. Air Force, culminating in his assignment as the 4th Commander, U.S. Cyber Command and 19th Director of the National Security Agency. In these roles, Haugh served as the National Manager for all federal government National Security Systems and led all U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) cyber operations.

“We are honored to welcome Tim Haugh to Georgetown as a Distinguished Fellow,” said SFS Professor Rebecca Patterson, director of the Security Studies Program. “His extraordinary, decades-long military career and his expertise in cyber operations and national security will bring invaluable insight to our students and faculty. We look forward to the depth of experience and strategic perspective he will share with our community.”

As a Distinguished Fellow in Residence with SSP, Haugh will mentor and engage with students, particularly those studying cyber and intelligence, work closely with program faculty and share his insights on national security in events with SFS and the broader Georgetown community.

This represents yet another investment by SSP to be the nation’s top security studies master’s program, equipping its students with best-in-class experience in technology and national security. The technology and security concentration is led by SFS Professor Andrew Imbrie, co-author of a leading book on Artificial Intelligence, “New Fire: War, Peace, and Democracy in the Age of AI.” SSP also recently hired former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy Michael Sulmeyer as a Professor of the Practice, who will pilot a new Technology and National Security class in the spring. Now, the addition of Haugh brings unparalleled four-star leadership experience in technology and national security to the program’s students.

During his career, Haugh commanded at the squadron, group, wing, numbered air force and joint levels. His other notable tours included assignments as Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force Ares, Commander of Cyber National Mission Force and Commander of Sixteenth Air Force.

“I am honored and humbled to join the Security Studies Program and the School of Foreign Service,” said Haugh. “Partnering with the faculty to enhance the experience of students preparing for national security careers is something I very much look forward to.”

A native of Hughesville, Pennsylvania, Haugh earned his commission in 1991 as a distinguished graduate of the ROTC program at Lehigh University, where he also earned his bachelor of arts in Russian studies. He holds master of science degrees from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Naval Postgraduate School and Southern Methodist University.
