Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service has appointed the Honorable Kurt M. Campbell as a Distinguished Fellow in Diplomacy. Campbell most recently served as the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State in the Biden Administration. In his new role, Campbell will engage with students and faculty by teaching classes, offering mentorship, and speaking at alumni and student events, including those in our new Jakarta location. His appointment with Georgetown begins this semester.

“Kurt Campbell’s long and distinguished career in diplomacy speaks for itself. I am very glad to have the opportunity to welcome him to SFS at this stage in his career to engage on issues of diplomacy with our students,” said SFS Dean Joel Hellman. “The addition of Kurt to our school also represents the way we fulfill our promise to our students—to provide them access to the people who have helped shape the global order so that they can learn the real work of diplomacy.”

Campbell was sworn into the Senate-confirmed role of 22nd Deputy Secretary of State on February 12, 2024. Prior to assuming this position, Deputy Secretary Campbell served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council. He was previously founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Asia Group, LLC, a strategic advisory and capital management group, and he recently returned to The Asia Group as Chairman. From 2009 to 2013, Campbell served as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Earlier, he was the CEO and Co-Founder of the Center for a New American Security and concurrently served as the Director of the Aspen Strategy Group and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Washington Quarterly. He was also an Associate Professor of Public Policy and International Relations at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Campbell received his B.A. from the University of California, San Diego, and his doctorate in international relations from Brasenose College at Oxford University, where he was a Distinguished Marshall Scholar. Campbell is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award.
