Latin America and Caribbean summer programs

Take advantage of academic summer programs, facilitated by the Center for Latin American Studies, and engage professionally in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the summer programs, students have analyzed green hydrogen law and renewable energies in Brazil, studied public education access and healthcare standards in Chile and considered new migration trends in Mexico in order to advocate for more comprehensive migration assistance. The three or six credit program cost includes tuition for the credits plus a mandatory international insurance charge. These credits are fulfilled through academic coursework with the option to pursue an internship that matches your professional objectives.

Most students receive financial support to attend these summer programs – over the last five years, almost 100% of participants received some form of financial support.

Internships

Our program’s required internship is an opportunity to apply the practical skills and knowledge gained through your coursework in a real-world setting. Our students have held internships at institutions like Fundación Chile 21 and Centro de Investigación y Educación Popular / Programa por la Paz (CINEP/PPP). Should you choose to pursue an internship in Latin America, you can apply for international internship funding support provided by the program. Previously, students have been supported to pursue internships in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

Latin American Studies Association Congress

As a student of our program, you can apply to attend and present your research at the annual Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Congress. Attending the LASA Congress exposes you to peers and experts in the field committed to furthering the research and teachings of Latin America. Each year, our program awards five travel grants worth up to $500 each. Students may apply for these travel grants to help cover costs associated with registration for, travel to and lodging at the LASA Congress.

Student research

During your time in the Latin American Studies program, you can conduct original research with the mentorship and support of the Center for Latin American Studies expert faculty and practitioners. You can also take advantage of student research grants to support your research on Latin America and/or the Caribbean conducted for a curricular requirement, such as a thesis or a capstone project. Allowable expenses include travel to conduct research, field research, the purchase of datasets, research assistance and translation services. These grants are also awarded to support students traveling to present their research at conferences.
