Asian Studies Graduate Certificate
The Asian Studies Graduate Certificate is for students interested in an intensive study of Asia. The certificate is open to all Georgetown University graduate students except students already enrolled in the M.A. in Asian Studies.
Requirements
To earn the Asian Studies Graduate Certificate, graduate students must complete these requirements.

Candidates for the certificate must demonstrate proficiency in a language native to Asia in one of these ways:
- Successful completion, with a grade of B or above, of two years of the language at Georgetown University
- A specified grade of proficiency in U.S. government language testing
- Passed a proficiency test at Georgetown University
- Successful completion of other testing approved by the director of Asian Studies
Coursework
Students must complete five courses (15 credits), not including acquisition-level language courses, whose primary focus is on Asia from at least two areas of study, including:
- Government
- History
- Economics
- Sociology
- Anthropology
- Philosophy
- Culture / Society
If the Asian Studies connection is not explicit in the course title, you can petition for the course to count towards the graduate certificate. The criteria include at least 25% Asia-related content in the syllabus, and the final paper/project should focus on an aspect related to Asia. Additionally, thesis papers focused on Asia written within thesis seminars also have the potential to count towards the Asian Studies Graduate Certificate. Course petitions, including syllabi, final papers and a brief justification, can be directed to Program Director Robert Lyons at Robert.Lyons@georgetown.edu.
Registration
Candidates for the Asian Studies Graduate Certificate must register with the Asian Studies Program by completing the Graduate Certificate Registration Form (PDF). The form may be emailed to Robert Lyons at Robert.Lyons@georgetown.edu or may be hand delivered to ICC 302-B.
