Undergraduate Advising
A unique aspect of our undergraduate program at the School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University is our emphasis on personalized advising.
Deans with relevant academic expertise are here to provide you with tailored advice, differing from the guidance you might receive from faculty members or academic counselors. The undergraduate deans use their background, faculty knowledge and thorough understanding of both academic and co-curricular opportunities to help you navigate your educational journey, all within the broader mission of the school and the ethos of the university.
Academic advising
The dean’s office serves as your primary source of information throughout your SFS undergraduate experience. The dean’s staff is responsible for managing the undergraduate program and advising you on all academic matters, including the completion of degree requirements; handling requests for leaves of absence, incomplete coursework and other applications of university policy; course selection and registration; major selection; overseas study; honors programs and post-graduate plans.
Additionally, the dean’s office is here to assist you in cases of illness or emergency and provides information on campus resources available to support you with various academic and health issues. You are encouraged to reach out to the dean’s office anytime you have questions or need assistance. The office is open on business days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Scheduling appointments
You can sign up for appointments online using Georgetown’s Google Apps. Make sure you are logged into your Google Apps account with your Georgetown NetID to schedule an appointment.
Instructions to schedule an appointment
- Click on the “schedule an appointment” button under your dean’s name to access their calendar, which shows available appointments. You will see your own Google calendar overlaid on the appointment page, making it easier for you to find times that work.
- Check the calendar for availability. If it indicates that there are no appointments available for several months ahead, it simply means that the dean’s slots are filled for that week and the dean has not yet released slots for the upcoming week. Please check back on Friday for the following week’s appointments.
- If you need to cancel or reschedule, please do so as soon as you can. This courtesy allows your dean and fellow students the chance to utilize that time if it becomes available. No-shows will be on record.
- Please note that if your Google calendar isn’t set to the Eastern Time Zone, you might accidentally book an appointment at the wrong time.
Addressing faculty and staff at Georgetown
At Georgetown, it is customary for students to address their deans, professors and staff members using specific titles. Deans should be referred to as “Dean X,” professors as “Professor Y,” and staff members as “Mr. Z” or “Ms. Z,” depending on their preference. This formal approach fosters a respectful academic environment.
