The one-year Executive Master in Diplomacy and International Affairs (EMDIA) program is designed to cultivate future leaders in the Asia Pacific. EMDIA equips practitioners from the Asia Pacific with essential skills to tackle global and regional challenges. In January 2025, Georgetown University is launching Georgetown SFS Asia-Pacific (GSAP), its new location in Jakarta, Indonesia, building on its established campuses in Washington, DC, and Doha, Qatar. The EMDIA program offers a truly international education, combining coursework across these strategic locations, all vital hubs of international diplomacy.

The EMDIA program has been developed by Georgetown’s Asian Studies Program and Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, in close consultation with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Ministry of Finance’s LPDP Scholarship Program. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of international affairs practitioners in the Asia Pacific. Courses will be taught by Georgetown’s renowned faculty and affiliated practitioners.

The EMDIA program has the following key distinguishing features:

  • A concentrated curriculum curated especially for practitioners of international affairs in the Asia Pacific. The program is especially suitable for mid-career professionals who can benefit from completing a master’s program within one academic year and returning to their careers on an accelerated track.
  • The program delivers its international affairs program through an innovative multi-location model. Students will focus on 1) the Asia Pacific while in Jakarta, 2) the Middle East while in Doha, and 3) global issues and international institutions while in Washington DC.

Admissions

The EMDIA is open to highly qualified:

  • Practitioners engaged in international affairs, including government ministries in relevant fields such as foreign affairs, finance, defense, environment, trade, and investment.
  • Other practitioners from the Asia Pacific region, including state-owned enterprises

The admissions criteria include:

  • A bachelor’s degree 
  • A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 80 or IELTS of 7.0. Scores are valid for no more than two years from the test date.

Admission Review Process

1) Indonesian applicants (government and non-government) wishing to be considered for the LPDP program should submit application materials to both Georgetown University and the LPDP Program by LPDP’s deadline of November 8, 2024. Other applicants may submit their materials for Georgetown’s application by November 20, 2024. Applications submitted by November 1, 2024 will receive priority consideration.

2) Georgetown University will conduct a holistic admission review process that includes:

  • Academic records
  • Statement of purpose submitted by the applicant
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Admissions interview

Funding*

The EMDIA program tuition is 30 credit hours at a rate of $2,550 per credit hour. EMDIA follows the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences tuition and fees schedule. Find more information on the overall tuition and fees for the academic year 2024-2025, including payment plans.

Indonesian citizens may be eligible for the LPDP scholarship, which fully covers tuition and living expenses. Please note that the deadline for the LPDP scholarship for EMDIA is November 8, 2024. LPDP applicants are required to provide proof that they have already submitted their applications to Georgetown’s EMDIA program. Thus, applicants must submit their applications to Georgetown’s EMDIA program before they submit their LPDP applications by November 8. Please refer to the LPDP website for details. Other applicants may request to be considered for financial aid from Georgetown.

Curriculum

The 30-credit executive master’s program will span a full academic year, with one semester in Jakarta covering key issues focusing on the Asia-Pacific region, a week-long module in Qatar focusing on the Middle East and Energy issues, and one semester in Washington, examining global issues. How to Apply

To start or continue the application process for Spring 2025, access the Georgetown Graduate Application Portal. The regular application deadline is November 20, 2024. Applications submitted by November 1, 2024, will receive priority consideration.

  1. Recommendation letters: A minimum of 2 recommendation letters (up to 3 letters) is required. Letter writers should be anyone who can provide an assessment of the applicant’s academic or professional work. For example, former professors/lecturers or former work supervisors/colleagues.
  2. Resume, transcripts, statement of interest: Applicants must upload their resume, university transcripts, and an academic statement of interest.
  3. English language test scores: Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through either
    a) graduating from a university in which English was the primary language of instruction,
    b) a TOEFL iBT score of at least 80, or
    c) an IELTS score of at least 7.0.

Applicants will be asked to submit their unofficial scores on the application under the “self-reported test scores” section. Applicants must have the official scores sent to Georgetown University from the TOEFL or IELTS websites.

  • On the TOEFL site, applicants will have the official TOEFL iBT scores submitted by Educational Testing Service to Georgetown University, reporting Georgetown’s institutional code of 5244.
  • On the IELTS site, applicants will use the official electronic score delivery service. Please be sure to select “Georgetown University – Graduate School of Arts and Sciences” (ID: 157042), located in Washington, District of Columbia, United States of America.
