Sonya Finley

Adjunct Professor - Center for Security Studies (CSS)

Dr. Sonya Finley is an Adjunct Professor for the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University and a Professor of Strategy at the National War College, National Defense University. Dr. Finley's research and teaching interests include national security and defense strategy, public diplomacy and strategic communication. A retired Army officer with more than 26 years of experience, she served as a strategist in overseas assignments in the Republic of Korea, Iraq, and Europe.

Dr. Finley's previous jobs include: Professor of Military Strategy at The Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, National Defense University; Strategic Plans Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy; Deputy Chief and Strategic Advisor in the Commander's Initiatives Group, Multi-National Forces-Iraq, Baghdad, Iraq; Strategic Advisor and Speechwriter for the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, Washington, D.C.; Strategic Advisor and Speechwriter in the Commander's Initiatives Group, United States Forces Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea; Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; and an Air Defense Artillery officer with assignments in Europe and deployments in the Middle East. She holds a PhD from Virginia Tech in Planning, Governance, and Globalization; a MPA from Cornell University; and a BA in International Studies/German from Emory University. She also has a Certificate in Strategic Thinking and Management for Competitive Advantage from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania
