Olivier Backx

M.S. in Foreign Service Student

Olivier Backx is an MSFS student concentrating in Geoeconomics, Business & Finance. He is interested in transnational trade and the ways economics, finance, and logistics shape the movement of goods and capital across borders. At Georgetown, he focuses on developing the skills needed to work at the intersection of global commerce and international cooperation, with a particular interest in private sector engagement and trade driven economic integration. He is also pursuing the Landegger Program in International Business Diplomacy, which trains students for work that bridges international business and diplomacy.

Before MSFS, Olivier worked in the Dutch House of Representatives as a Parliamentary Policy Officer Intern. He authored a long term vision on North Sea energy and maritime strategy, contributing to work on economic development, sustainability, and the logistical systems that support regional competitiveness. This experience strengthened his interest in how commercial infrastructure and economic priorities shape cooperation between countries and industries.

Olivier earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science, cum laude, from Leiden University, specializing in International Relations and Organizations. His thesis examined foreign direct investment in Africa and the conditions that support long term prosperity. During his semester abroad at the University of Ottawa, he completed coursework in microeconomics and macroeconomics, expanding his grounding in the economic foundations of international exchange.

At Georgetown, Olivier serves as a Graduate Representative on the School Council, a Student Representative for MSFS, and a Senator in Graduate Government. He speaks English and Dutch fluently and has working proficiency in German.
