Mary Hallward-Driemeier
Professor of the Practice, Professor of the Practice of International Economics
Mary Hallward-Driemeier is a Professor of the Practice of International Economics at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Previously, she worked at the World Bank for over 25 years where she was the Senior Economic Adviser to three vice presidents and two World Bank Chief Economists. She represented the World Bank in G20 Working Groups and led the ‘Jobs & Economic Transformation Special Theme’ for IDA. She led the World Bank’s analytical work on trade, innovation and private sector development. She has published widely on the development impacts of technological change, drivers of firm productivity, the distributional impacts of financial crises and of corruption, and women's economic empowerment. Her recent books include At Your Service? The Promise of Services Led Development; Trouble in the Making? The Future of Manufacturing-Led Development; and Europe 4.0: Addressing the Digital Dilemma. Mary received her A.B. from Harvard University, her M.Sc. in Development Economics from Oxford University where she was a Rhodes Scholar, and her Ph.D. in Economics from M.I.T.
