Global Human Development Student
Liam Madden grew up in Douglas, Massachusetts. After graduating from Boston College with a B.A. in economics and international studies, which included studying and interning in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, Liam worked for two years in Washington, DC, for the National Democratic Institute and PartnersGlobal, with a focus on democracy and governance programming. Liam worked with UNICEF Sudan for three years, initially as a Planning Officer and later as a Program Officer and Special Assistant to the Deputy Representative. In this role, Liam supported the coordination and management of UNICEF’s country program through the strategic initiatives of the organization's senior management. Liam was based in Khartoum until April 2023, when the ongoing civil war forced United Nations (UN) personnel to relocate to Port Sudan. Liam’s professional pursuits in development include the use of data in emergency response, social protection, and public financial management. He wants to gain the skills to create more country-led and sustainable public service systems.
Summer internship
I spent this summer continuing to work for UNICEF in Mozambique in the Social Protection, Social Policy, and Research Division. Applying economic and data analysis skills from the GHD program, I worked across multiple sectors to analyze the quantity and quality of Mozambique’s public investments in children. This included producing briefs on public expenditure on social protection, health, and education interventions.
