Grace Schwab
Adjunct Assistant Professor
Ms. Grace Schwab leads a team of Japan Country Directors, who advise and support DoD leadership in setting the strategic direction and defense policy priorities for the U.S.-Japan Alliance. From November 2020 to January 2022, Ms. Schwab was as an Israel Country Director, collaborating with Israeli counterparts on regional security challenges and on measures to build joint military advantage in the Middle East region. Before this position, she served as a Japan Country Director, working closely with U.S. interagency and Japanese colleagues to improve Japan’s cyber and information security and to expand security cooperation with Australia, India, Philippines, and the Republic of Korea. Prior to joining the Department of Defense in November 2018, she was as a Foreign Affairs Officer in State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability (ADS). Her portfolio included issues related to strategic stability, nuclear deterrence, and ally assurance in the Indo-Pacific region. She also served in the political-military section at U.S. Embassy Seoul in 2016.
As part of the accelerated 5-year program, Ms. Schwab received her M.A. in Security Studies (2013) and B.S. in Science, Technology & International Affairs (2012) from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.
