Diana Dumitru

Diana Dumitru is Associate Professor of History and Ion Rațiu Chair in Romanian Studies at Georgetown University. Her research interests include the Holocaust in Eastern Europe, nationality policies and antisemitism in the USSR, and late Stalinism and postwar trials in the Soviet Union. Her teaching ranges across modern Eastern European and Jewish history, the Holocaust and fascism, historical memory, and the uses of history in contemporary politics.

Her most recent book, Soviet Jews under Late Stalinism: A Story from the Western Borderlands (Cambridge University Press, 2026), examines how Jews in postwar Soviet Moldavia navigated a state that was, at once, a source of professional advancement and a source of enduring suspicion. She is also co-editor, with A. Dirk Moses, of The Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Victims, Perpetrators, Justice, and the Question of Genocide (Routledge, 2025).

Dumitru has held multiple fellowships, including a Woodrow Wilson Center Fellowship, a Fulbright Visiting Scholarship for research at Georgetown University, a research fellowship at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, a fellowship at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, and a research fellowship at the Imre Kertész Kolleg at Jena University in Germany. She serves on the editorial boards of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, East European Jewish Affairs, and the Journal of Genocide Research.
