Annelle Sheline
Assistant Adjunct Professor
Annelle Sheline, PhD, is a research fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a think tank dedicated to advocating for a less militaristic U.S. foreign policy.
She served for a year at the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor's Office of Near East Affairs before resigning in March 2024 over the Biden administration's unconditional support for Israel's military operations in Gaza.
Sheline is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Arab Center of Washington DC, as well as a non-resident fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy.
Her current work focuses on U.S. foreign policy towards the Middle East, focused in particular on the impacts of U.S. militarism and the Global War on Terror.
Prior to joining the Quincy Institute she was the Zwan Postdoctoral Fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute, where she contributed to research on religious identity in the Middle East.
While completing her PhD in political science at George Washington University, her research focused on the promotion of so-called "moderate Islam" as a means for Arab governments to signal their support for American regional objectives.
Prior to beginning her PhD, she worked as a journalist in Egypt and Yemen.
