Alyssa Harvie
M.S. in Foreign Service Student
Alyssa Harvie is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) program at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, concentrating in Global Politics and Security. Her interests include democracy and governance, peacebuilding, human rights, and mis/disinformation, with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa.
Previously, Alyssa managed federally-funded democracy and governance programs in West Africa as a program officer at the International Republican Institute (IRI), where she worked on election observation missions, conducted program impact evaluations, and supported field office operations. Prior to IRI, Alyssa worked at the Atlantic Council as a program assistant for the Africa Center, where she contributed to the think tank’s digital communications, drafting of reports and policy briefs, and event planning for private roundtables, public events, and conferences related to US-African affairs.
Alyssa studied Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania as a 2019 U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholar and international law and intelligence analysis in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2017. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from American University’s School of International Service, with a minor in French and certificate in Community-Based Research. Alyssa grew up in Richmond, Virginia and speaks English, French, Swahili, and some Danish. Outside of school, she enjoys gardening, reading, and working as a bookseller.
