Katie Cheung
Class of 2027
Major: International Politics
Hometown: Boston, MA
Katie is most interested in global educational equity and access to sustainable employment for migrant and underserved communities. Her passion for public service, migration, and international development is deeply rooted in her grandparents’ immigration experience, fleeing China for the US during Mao Zedong’s Communist takeover. Additionally, traveling to Rwanda in high school sparked Katie’s interest in the geopolitics of African development, as she witnessed firsthand Rwanda’s resilient efforts to rebuild unity after the 1994 genocide and invest in the next generation of innovators.
As a Pelosi Scholar, Katie aims to build on her research on the role of teachers in Kenya, and her work with USAID’s Africa Bureau on pre-primary education initiatives, by learning more about the USG role in strengthening foundational learning efforts and investing in sustainable employment opportunities in emerging economies. Katie looks forward to developing professional skills, gaining mentorship, and building meaningful connections within the Pelosi Scholars cohort, as they together prepare for a future in public service.
