Application procedure
We understand that transferring to a new academic program is a significant decision, and we are committed to helping you navigate this process. Below is a detailed overview of the steps before submitting your application to ensure that joining the School of Foreign Service (SFS) aligns with your academic and professional goals.
Application steps
1. Familiarize yourself with the SFS curriculum
It’s essential to fully understand the SFS curriculum, including the core requirements, language proficiency requirements and the major programs that interest you. Review the requirements for the following:
2. Review SFS academic regulations
Be sure to understand the specific academic policies at the School of Foreign Service, which may differ from those at your current school. For example, pay close attention to:
- Double counting between SFS/university core, majors, minors and certificate courses
- In-residence semesters at SFS
- Restrictions on the number of courses taken outside of SFS
3. Attend an information session
Attending an information session is not mandatory for applying but is required before scheduling a meeting with the internal transfer dean. We hold these sessions four times a year. Be sure to sign up for the session at least 24 hours before the session to receive the Zoom link.

4. Schedule a meeting with your academic dean and/or faculty advisor
Discussing your decision with your current academic dean and/or faculty advisor before proceeding with the transfer process is important.
5. Contact the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education with any questions
Once you’ve completed the previous steps, email Dean Julia at sj906@georgetown.edu, if you have any questions or need additional guidance.
6. Complete and submit the application
Submit your transfer application by 5:00 p.m. EST on or before the last day of classes in the semester before your desired enrollment date.
By applying for an internal transfer, you confirm that you understand the SFS curriculum and have determined that the academic opportunities within SFS align with your interests and long-term goals.
Eligibility
To be eligible for an internal transfer to the School of Foreign Service (SFS), you must meet the following criteria:
- Completion of one year of study: You must have completed at least one year of study in your current school before applying for transfer.
- Current enrollment: You must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing or the School of Health.
- Good academic and disciplinary standing: You must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
- Full-time status: You must have completed a full-time course load in the most recent semester.
Your application will be considered based on your academic record at Georgetown, your transfer application essay and the feasibility of the academic program you propose to pursue within the School of Foreign Service.
