Core Curriculum
At Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service (SFS), we educate the next generation of world leaders.
In the Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS), you’ll study international affairs through the liberal arts lens, gaining a well-rounded understanding of global issues from various perspectives.
Your academic journey will begin with a multidisciplinary core curriculum that spans economics, geography, history, international relations, political science, science and theology.
Your first year
In your first year, you’ll dive into unique SFS courses that will set the stage for your academic growth. Courses like Maps of the Modern World will introduce you to critical global concepts, while a small, interactive proseminar will help you transition into academic life at Georgetown. This is an excellent opportunity to build a close relationship with your professor and fellow students and foster a collaborative learning environment.
Second language proficiency
An essential component of our curriculum is proficiency in a second language. By mastering a second language, you’ll gain cultural literacy and the communication skills necessary to navigate international environments. Georgetown offers many languages, including Arabic, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Spanish and Turkish among others. Our deep course selection within these languages allows even the most proficient students to continue developing their language skills.
Building critical thinking and quantitative skills
At SFS, we strongly emphasize critical thinking and analytical skills. You’ll refine your ability to express your reasoning in writing as well as visual and oral presentations. Additionally, you will gain quantitative skills and an understanding of scientific reasoning, particularly related to international affairs. Our science requirement includes courses like The Science of Extinction and De-Extinction and Examining Crises Through the Lens of Science, encouraging you to explore how scientific issues intersect with global challenges.
Research skills
A key part of your education at SFS is learning how to conduct independent research. Our core curriculum equips you with the skills to analyze, synthesize and present your findings clearly and compellingly. This ability is vital for anyone pursuing a career in international service and is integral to Georgetown’s mission of educating the whole person.
Ethics and morality
In line with Georgetown’s Jesuit values, SFS students approach the study of international affairs with a deep sense of ethics and morality. You’ll be encouraged to think critically about global issues through a lens of justice, fairness and responsibility. As you prepare for graduation, you’ll leave Georgetown with the knowledge, skills and ethical framework necessary to serve your community—and the world effectively.
