New Year Outlook for the Philippines: From Maritime Dispute with China to Mid-Term Elections

Marites Dañguilan Vitug, one of the Philippines’ most respected journalists, will discuss her new book, Rock Solid: How the Philippines Won Its Maritime Case against China (Ateneo Press, 2018) and share her views on Philippine foreign policy and the Philippine political outlook in 2019. She will begin her presentation with the landmark Philippine victory in its maritime case against China and what has happened under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, including the shift in foreign policy, the pivot towards China, and what the Philippines has to show for it in terms of economic gains. She will also share her views on the 2019 political prospects for the Philippines, in particular the mid-term elections outlook.
