Mr. Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, gave a talk on delivering prosperity and deepening democracy in the Eurozone on October 12, 2017. The event was sponsored by the BMW Center for German and European Studies. Moscovici argued that it is now more important than ever for the European Commission to strive for strong unity in the Eurozone.
We need strong unity among us, I’m against any East/West divide, North/South divide, but still I know that the Eurozone is and is going to be more and more the heart of the European construction.
Moscovici mentioned some solutions to deepen democracy in the Eurozone, such as creating initiatives to deepen the Economic Monetary Union, a Eurozone summit with the heads of state and government, and establishing a Eurozone budget to stabilize the EU economy. Specifically, the Commissioner called for a reformed budget that would be simpler, more efficient and more democratic. He also proposed creating a European Monetary Fund incorporated into European institutions that would deal with the EU’s own economic crises.
“We hope the leaders of the 27 will provide the commission with clear political guidance because we need that.”
