Edom Tesfa is a junior in the SFS from Alexandria, Va., majoring in Culture and Politics with a concentration in social contexts of immigrant and refugee education. A recipient of a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, Edom spent her summer studying at the Mandarin Training Center at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei. Edom works as a research assistant for Professor Douglas S. Reed on a study of academic help-seeking networks among newcomer English language learners at two Northern Virginia high schools. Her honors thesis examines racial and ethnic identity negotiation among Ethiopian- and Eritrean-American high school and college students. Besides Mandarin Chinese, Edom speaks Amharic and Spanish.
