Debate on Iran Nuclear Agreement – #GUDealOrNoDeal

Event Recap by GUTV and Samuel Kim (SFS’18) from The Caravel

Georgetown University College Democrats hosted a debate on the Iran Nuclear Agreement between SFS Professors Matthew Kroenig and Colin Kahl. The event was co-sponsored by the Georgetown Israel Alliance, the International Relations Club, J Street U and the Security Studies Program.

Matthew Kroenig is an Associate Professor of Government and Foreign Service and International Relations Field Chair in the Department of Government. Colin Kahl is an Associate Professor in the Security Studies Program, but currently on leave from the University while serving as Vice President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor. The two faculty members hold opposing views on the best approach to deal with Iranian nuclear proliferation, which they have publicly aired through countering articles in Foreign Affairs magazine in the last few years.

The event in the Healey Family Student Center brought out hundreds of students to watch Kroenig and Kahl publicly debate the topic. Professor Kroenig argued against the deal while Professor Kahl argued in favor. Dr. Ariane Tabatabai, Assistant Teaching Professor in the Security Studies Program, moderated the debate.
