Lahra Smith is an Associate Professor in the African Studies Program in the SFS. Her ongoing research interests include equality and citizenship, as well as refugees and migration and ongoing work on women and politics. She has a current project looking at civic education and constitutional reform in Kenya. Prof. Smith’s book entitled Making Citizens in Africa: Ethnicity, Gender and National Identity in Ethiopia focused on the role of political institutions in addressing conflict based largely on ethnic and language identities. She has worked for USAID and Oxfam America, and she has taught at Addis Ababa University and served as an election observer in Ethiopia and Kenya. She is also the mother of two boys who loves hiking, biking and reading novels whenever she gets a few quiet moments.
