Founding dean of the SFS campus in Doha, Qatar and Sun Yat-Sen professor of Chinese Studies James Reardon-Anderson has been named senior associate dean and director of the SFS undergraduate program. Reardon-Anderson is the author of five books on the history and politics of China, most recently Reluctant Pioneers: China's Expansion Northward, 1644-1937 (Stanford University Press, 2005). Before coming to Georgetown, he taught at the University of Michigan and the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and served as director of the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies in Taipei, director of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University, and director of the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China.
Reardon-Anderson relishes his new role on main campus, and finds it to be an even greater challenge than the one he faced as founding dean of SFS-Q. He remarked with typical modesty, "In Qatar, we started from scratch, and anything I left standing could be labeled a success. In Washington, I start with what is arguably the best program of its kind in the world -- and hope to pass it on without diminishing its luster."
