Joanna Lewis, a new assistant professor of science, technology, and international affairs (STIA), came to SFS in 2008 because the international focus of the students and faculty as well as the energy and environmental focus within the STIA program fit perfectly with her research and teaching interests.

Lewis teaches a course on climate science and policy, another which she created specifically for the STIA program on energy and environment in China, as well quantitative methods and a first-year proseminar. “I hope that my new courses will encourage SFS students to pursue their interests in energy and environmental policy at a time when these issues are becoming increasingly important around the world,” she remarked.

Professor Lewis’s research focuses on the renewable energy industry as well as expanding options for multilateral engagement on environmental issues. She has a particular interest in how countries like China can leapfrog from their current technology to advanced, low-carbon technologies. “It is a particularly exciting time to work on U.S.-China relations and issues of energy and climate change,” Lewis says. “The new administration has recommitted the U.S. to these issues in a very meaningful way.”

She serves as the primary technical advisor for the Asia Society’s Initiative for U.S.-China Cooperation on Energy and Climate and as an international advisor to the Energy Foundation’s China Sustainable Energy Program in Beijing. Before coming to Georgetown, Lewis was a senior international fellow at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change and a researcher in the China Energy Group at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Lewis holds a B.A. from Duke University in environmental science and policy and an M.A./Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley in energy and resources.
