Carol Lancaster, professor in the School of Foreign Service and department of government, has been named interim dean of the School of Foreign Service, effective July 1, 2009. She will retain her position as director of the Mortara Center for International Studies until January of 2010. Professor Lancaster has been at Georgetown since 1981 and has previously served as the director of both African Studies and Masters of Science in Foreign Service programs.

From 1993-96, Lancaster held the position of Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development. She was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1980-81, and has received fellowships from the United States Congress, the Carnegie Corporation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Fulbright Institution, and the Institute for International Economics, among others. Lancaster’s wide-ranging experience also includes stints at the Office of Management and Budget, the United Nations, and the World Bank as well as service on the boards of the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, Vital Voices and the Center for Global Development.

She has published numerous books and articles on the politics of foreign aid and international development and teaches undergraduate and graduate seminars on topics in development, foreign aid, and political leadership. Lancaster graduated from the School of Foreign Service in 1964 and holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.

The committee in charge of finding a new dean begins its search this summer. Angela Stent, professor in the department of government and the School of Foreign Service, and director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies, has been chosen as the committee chair.
