School of Foreign Service Dean Robert L. Gallucci has been selected as the new President of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, effective July 1, 2009. Dean Gallucci has been at SFS since 1996, making him one of the School's longest-serving deans. During his tenure, the School of Foreign Service expanded its faculty, graduate and undergraduate offerings; established the Mortara Center for International Studies; opened its campus in Qatar; and cemented its reputation at the top of the field for international relations. 

He is a dedicated teacher and administrator, whose personal experience in government service and as a leading U.S. diplomat prepared him to lead Georgetown to our position at the forefront of international affairs education. - President John J. DeGioia

Gallucci joined SFS after twenty-one years of government service, beginning in 1974 at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and culminating in 1992 with his confirmation as Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. He was the chief U.S. negotiator with North Korea during the 1994 nuclear crisis and one of the principal architects of the resulting Agreed Framework. In March 1998, while at SFS, the Department of State appointed him Special Envoy to deal with the threat posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction, a position he held until January 2001. Gallucci holds a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook as well as a master's and doctorate in politics from Brandeis University.

The MacArthur Foundation is one of the nation’s largest, with headquarters in the United States and offices in Russia, India, Mexico, and Nigeria. It has awarded over $4 billion since its founding in 1978, and is perhaps best known for its “Genius Grants,” which provide $500,000 with no strings attached to those selected “for their creativity, originality, and potential to make important contributions in the future,” whatever their field. The Foundation’s other programs focus on issues in global security and sustainability, human and community development, and public interest media.
