This December, Georgetown Leadership Seminar (GLS) alumna Dr. Carolyn Gomes (GLS ’02) was awarded the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights for 2008 for her work as executive director of human rights advocacy group Jamaicans for Justice. The award is given every five years to individuals and organizations in recognition of their contribution to the protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

In his announcement of the 2008 awardees, UN General Assembly President Miguel d´Escoto Brockmann thanked Gomes and the other recipients for being “an inspiration to all of us who seek and believe another type of society, another type of political system, another economic model, another world is possible where all persons will be treated as brothers and sisters, without discrimination, exclusion or destruction of life in all its forms.” Past recipients of the award include President Jimmy Carter, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Since 1982, the Georgetown Leadership Seminar (GLS) at SFS has brought together emerging world leaders and top-level American policymakers for a week-long program of seminars and discussions on major foreign policy issues with the goal of establishing a dialogue of international and cross-disciplinary cooperation.
