On November 10th, 2008, the Science, Technology, and International Affairs program at SFS (STIA) hosted its annual Maloy Lecture in the ICC Auditorium. This year’s featured speaker was Dr. Sonia Sachs, Senior Health Scientist at Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the Health Coordinator of the Millennium Villages Project, who delivered a talk entitled “The Millennium Village Project: An Integrated Approach to Public Health in Low Income Settings”. Dr. Sachs spoke about her work with the Millennium Villages Project, an initiative which aims to help rural African communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty and demonstrate that the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDG) can be achieved in rural Africa by the UN’s 2015 deadline.

With the aid of new advances in science and technology, project personnel work with select villages to create and facilitate sustainable, community-led action plans tailored to the villages’ specific needs. Villages selected to participate in the Millennium Villages Project commonly receive mosquito netting, fertilizer and seeds, access to clean water, improved medical resources, and infrastructure improvements for their residents. In 1999, Paul and Catherine Maloy endowed the Maloy Family Fund to support health-related projects in the Science, Technology, and International Affairs program at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. The annual Maloy Lecture is an initiative made possible by this gift.
