Teresa Canida (F ’75) is an active member of the SFS Board of Visitors and the de facto founder and leader of Georgetown University’s Latin American Alliance. This spring, the Board of Governors’ Awards Committee named her as one of six Georgetown alumni to receive the 2007 John Carroll Award.
The John Carroll Award is given annually to Georgetown University alumni who have honored their alma mater and contributed significantly to the betterment of society and the nation through community service efforts and career accomplishments.
“Tere” is a deserving recipient on all counts. She is president, managing principal, and majority shareholder of Taplin, Canida, & Habacht, an institutional fixed income investment advisory firm in Miami, Florida. She also volunteers her time to the University of Miami Citizens Board of Trustees, College Assistance Program, Inc. and the New American Alliance Board.
Tere’s family also has strong ties to Georgetown. Her son is a 2007 SFS graduate and will be attending Georgetown Law Center in fall 2007. Her niece is currently a student at SFS. Her two brothers, sister, and sister-in-law are all Georgetown graduates.
Tere is a generous donor to financial aid and established the Alvarez Memorial Scholarship in memory of her father. She credits her parents for teaching the value of work and service. “If it weren’t for the sacrifices my parents made, none of us would have gone to Georgetown," she said.
