Professor of geography and geoscience Timothy Beach recently received a prestigious fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation for his research on the environmental history of the Maya lowlands. Beach was one of 189 awardees representing 77 institutions and the only 2007 winner from Georgetown. Guggenheim fellowships are partly based on “exceptional promise for future accomplishment.”

We need to educate international communities about science...

Beach had already been recognized for lifetime achievement by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In the fall of 2006, he was named a Fellow of AAAS for “major research contributions that improved understanding of the linkages among ancient agriculture, environmental change, and soil-geomorphic processes in Mesoamerica.” He is the sixth Georgetown University faculty member to receive such recognition.

Beach teaches in SFS' Science, Technology, and International Affairs program. His research in geography and environmental science focuses on human-environmental interactions, and he plans to examine policy issues in these areas while on sabbatical for his Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007-2008.

Beach has contributed greatly to SFS as a teacher, where he actively promotes science as an important part of education and international affairs. As he explains, “there is no liberal arts without science, and thus we are a key component to the educational mission of SFS. We need to educate international communities about science because some of the biggest issues are science issues: global climate change, ocean acidification, collapsing fisheries, or lack of clean drinking water for nearly one billion people.”
